Vol 5.12 "T.D.A.T" DECEMBER 1, 2006

Dear Friends,
It’s 2:26 p.m. on November 24, 2006. It’s T.D.A.T (the day after Thanksgiving). For most of us we have
enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving meal with multiple returns to fill up our plates. My first meal was on
Thanksgiving Eve (when all the prepping for the big day begins).Upon waking up Thanksgiving Day
and being notified that both sides of my family were experiencing illnesses, our plans to get together with
our loved ones turned into more of a series of phone calls and text messages. We gave our thanks even
though it was in spirit and not in person. My sister postponed her Thanksgiving all together until today
so the plague that had inhabited her home would be given the opportunity to leave.On most Thanksgiving
days I take pride in the pure gluttony that I partake in and the massive volume of food I can shovel
down my throat. This Thanksgiving was different because I had just read the best book on the psychology
of eating and why most of us are fat. Since the book ‘Mindless Eating, Why We Eat More Than We Think’,
is already on the New York Times best selling list, I obviously was not the first to discover this little
treasure.For starters, did you know, that if all you did was skip one soda pop a day (about 140 calories
per can), at the end of the year you would have lost approximately 14 pounds!Every 10 calories we
avoid each day translates into a pound of weight loss at the end of the year and vice versa. Every 10
calories we consume will literally add the same to our bottom line.This book shows that weight gain isn’t
a monster that overtakes us in the middle of the night, but an accumulation of thousands of small,
insignificant decisions that add up to the obesity problem we face today. We can start gaining control
by making small adjustments in our daily lives which will lead to weight loss without really trying.
As author Brian Wansink, PhD points out in his book, ‘the best diet is the one that you don’t even know
you’re on’. For example, it takes our bodies’ one calorie to burn one ounce of COLD water. So if you
drink the recommended eight glasses of cold water each day, you would burn (pain free) 64 calories
a day'”i.e. 6.4 pounds of weight loss in a year! So, just with that one can of soda you skip a day and
adding ice to your water, you’d be 20 pounds lighter at the end of the year! But, let’s not stop there!
Did you know that our bodies register full not based on calories but on volume? Let me say that
again'”our bodies register full not based on calories but on volume! It does not make a difference
whether we fill ourselves up with a 16 ounce prime rib or an 8 ounce filet mignon plus an eight ounce
glass of water. Once the fill line is passed our hunger pains go away. By playing with two things like air
and water we can increase the volume of our food and cut down the calories. If you took an eight ounce
smoothie and whipped it up until it filled a 16 ounce cup, you would feel full. But, without the air
pumping up the volume in the smoothie you would be going back for a second serving in no time. One of
the last interesting tricks is a play on the old 20% rule. If you fill your plate with only 80% of what
you think you will need to be satisfied and allow your brain 20 minutes to register and enjoy your
serving, you will feel just as full as if you ate the whole thing! I’d better stop there; I highly
recommend this book and believe it can be utilized as a tool to teach you to lose weight without
being on a diet.
