Vol 4.6 "Love In A Vacuum" June 23, 2005

Dear Friends,

It’s 12 noon straight-up, June 23, 2005. A little over a week ago, last Friday to be exact, the
media came knocking on my door. There was no, “How’s it going, Fred? Lovely day
isn’t it? What you been up to? You look good. Have you lost a little weight?” No, no,
no…pleasantries and salutations were set aside. The media, for all their inquisitive nature, wanted
to tell me and ask me just one thing:

Media: “Did you know that Tom
Cruise proposed to Katie Holmes last night?”

Me: “No. As a matter of fact, I
was calculating the number of days I probably have on this planet and being curious about when our
President is going to fold on his badly played Iraqi poker hand and push away from the table.
Let’s see…young men and young ladies are dying overseas in the name of freedom and
you guys want to talk about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Got it; I’m glad we have our priorities
straight! Why wasn’t I notified sooner?! You know my life revolves around the success or failure
of Hollywood celebrities! What can I do for you?”

Media: “We’ve got a 16
gigabyte digital picture of the ring. Can you reverse -engineer it and tell us what it is and what
it’s worth? Also, while you’re at it, we’d love to know what you think the odds are
that the happy couple will make it?”

Me: “There are already odds?”

Media: “Vegas has it about even
money, but one toss of Katie’s hair or one photo shot without the ring could send that into a tail
spin.”

Note to Readers: Being the Diamond
Guy®, many times I have been called into action to use my CSI skills and determine the value of a
rock or ring on a celebrity’s finger. Sometimes the media gives me all the intel and I have to tell
them if it’s plausible. Sometimes I’m given zilch except for a picture taken in Paris under
a starry sky at the Eiffel Tower. This was the case.

Me: “Alright. Get me the GIF (picture) and I’ll tell
you what you have in a couple of hours.” [See “Battle of the
Bling II” in the Photo Gallery under the Diamond Education section of the website.]
Like I
said, it’s been almost a week since the biggest story the media could come up with was Tom and
Katie (Tom-Kat). For a week their love affair has existed in this perfect little vacuum.

Today I looked up the word vacuum…

“ABSENCE OF MATTER.”

Talk to you next time,

Fred
