I’ve struggled with various mental-illness related problems most of my life, and often the treatments were not recognized by our health insurance as legitimate claims, causing my parents to have to pay for doctors bills and prescriptions out-of-hand. As a result, money has always been tight, particularly in the past few years. Through it all my mother has stood by me, forgiving me the financial and emotional burden my condition has inflicted on our family and always reassuring me that my depression is an obstacle I will one day overcome.
About a year ago we were forced to declare bankruptcy due to debts that would have resulted in us losing our house. My mother was forced to sell all her stocks, which had been passed to her by her parents, just to cover the excess medical bills. I took a part-time job for a few months, but was forced to quit when I began attending college full time in order to stay on my parents medical plan, the tuition for which is another hardship on our finances. Further complicating things is the fact that my father’s company is under new management, and they recently eliminated overtime, which has taken a large bite out of our income.
February 13th will be my parent’s 21st anniversary. My mother is a kind, selfless person who has always sacrificed her own comfort for my father and my benefit. She has given up a lot of herself for this family. Many years ago the stone for my mother’s engagement ring was lost, and it was my hope to replace the stone for her anniversary. However, it’s apparent that this idea is unfeasible, as what little money I do have saved is having to be used to pay for the veterinarian bills for my mothers 16 year old dog. It would be immeasurably wonderful if you could help me to give back some of the kindness my mother has given me over my lifetime by recreating this lost symbol of my parents bond.
