I’ll admit I was one of those girls that thought he’d pop the question at any moment. I’d decide that ‘this is it’ and stand waiting for him to reveal a tiny box on bended knee. Especially when EVERYTHING was perfect…
We were spending a week out of state visiting his family at their lake house. I was convinced that I’d become his fiance on my birthday, which we celebrated during our trip. After cake and ice
cream, he invited me to the boat for a romantic ride to watch the sunset. Wow! I KNEW this was it! He steered the boat out of the cove into the peaceful lake where my dream would come true… or so I thought. We sat and watched the gorgeous display. He whispered how much he loved me. He even reached into his pocket a few times.
Minutes later, we were headed back to the dock… I’m ashamed to say I actually voiced my disappointment. He looked at me with disbelief and reminded me that he couldn’t afford a ring just yet. Guilt overtook me and I apologized profusely. Needless to say, I went to bed that night with jumbled emotions. Little did I know, the night was not over. After such a tiring day, I fell quickly into deep sleep. I awoke to hear Trey whispering that he had to show me something outside. I assumed there must have a been a bear or some endangered animal roaming the front yard.
Unamused, I followed him to the front door and noticed it was 2 o’clock in the morning. We stepped outside and I waited for him to point out the hungry beast, but instead I heard music playing down by the lake. He lead me toward the dock and I saw candlelight by the water. It hit me… this was actually it. But I wasn’t prepared like all the other countless times that had been ‘just perfect’. The wave of emotion was more than I could handle as he lead me to the blanket with the tiny box in the middle.
Truthfully, I don’t remember exactly what he said and when it was time to open the box, it must have weighed a thousand pounds because my shaking hands couldn’t do it. After the tears he confessed to playing with my mind the night before – apparently he knew all along I’d expect it. After 4 years my heart still beats fast when I remember, and I smile to think that he knows me enough to know that he didn’t want to meet my expectation, he wanted to exceed it.
