6) Slide

Jeff and I went for a jog around my hometown. I kept getting way ahead of him–which never happens. I said, "What’s the matter slow poke?" He said, "Lets go to the playground." The playground in my hometown is a special place to me. My father ran the activities on the playground for 25 years and my grandmother’s house overlooks it. My lifetime of happy memories of summer movies against the equipment building, arts and crafts, basketball games, and crazy contests fill me up when I’m there.

On this summer evening we stopped and went swinging on a double swing. Two rabbits were playing together and jumping higher than I’ve ever seen rabbits go. We laughed and Jeff said, "Hey, why don’t you go down the slide?" So I went to the top of the sliding board (the same one that has been there since my childhood) and he stood at the bottom. I said, "I haven’t been down this slide since I was a little girl." When I got to the bottom, Jeff was on his knee. At that moment, my childhood and my future came together. Jeff had picked the perfect way to propose to me. He had lagged behind because he was afraid that the ring would fall out of his pocket when we were jogging. We danced in the pavilion together even though there wasn’t any music.
