When we first started dating, Chris and I both knew that although we loved each other, it would be at least five years before we would consider getting married. We were both in school, I wanted to go onto graduate school as well and we thought it best to be in secure jobs as we began our family. All that would take some time.
We had been dating nearly six years when Chris started talking about wanting to buy a house. Although I was supportive, I refused to buy the house WITH him as we were not married or even engaged, and honestly I was getting a bit frustrated. He continued with his search for a house and found one that we both liked. He put a bid in on it and lost it in multiple offers. A few weeks later he told me the deal had fallen through and we should go look at it again so we could discuss if he should submit another offer.
When we reached the door, he asked me to unlock the lockbox. He gave me several three-letter codes to try, none of which worked. He finally said, “Try I-L-Y.” I did and as the lockbox opened, a key to the house and an engagement ring fell out. I turned around and he asked me to marry him and live in the house… the house he had purchased several weeks prior that was never “lost in multiple offers" — the house he had just closed on for us to live in together as husband and wife!!
