My boyfriend Dave and I had been dating for about eleven months not an unreasonable length of time by any means, but long enough for me to start getting a little anxious about the subject of marriage. To make matters worse, for the past few months Dave had adopted the really annoying habit of pausing outside jewelry store windows, pointing out engagement rings he particularly liked. I knew he was teasing me, and I guess I knew, deep in my heart, that one of those rings would wind up on my finger. I just wished he’d get on with it! On Christmas Eve, we were invited to his uncle’s house for a party. But for some reason, after he picked me up at my parents’ house, Dave insisted on stopping back at his apartment to show me something. Inside, he presented me with a note entitled "Directions to a Christmas Surprise." Beneath the title there was a little poem:
