5) A True Love Story

By Mathew Grady & Somer Gibson

In order to tell this story right, we must start from the beginning. Travel back with me to 2004, the end of our senior year. We were both graduating from St. Amant High School and ready to go on our senior trip. Our senior trip was to be in Destin, Florida. But before we even pulled out of the parking lot for our trip, sparks were flying. When we arrived in Destin, we gradually became closer and closer, we had those oh so common googolly-eyes for each other. On the night of the 17th of May we went on our first date to the Louisiana Lagniappe in Destin. I bashfully asked her if I could buy her dinner and she, with those beautiful eyes, said yes. This was our first official date. Latter that night we ended up taking a walk on the beach. This is the spot where we first start our wonderful relationship.

Now that you have a little knowledge about our beginnings, lets move on to the juicy stuff. On the 17th day of May of the year 2006, I went over to Somer’s house to spend the day with her, as far as she thought. Instead, when I arrived at her house, I introduced her first surprise. Out of no where, I told her that she needs to pack her bags for the beach, and she, surprisingly, said ok, without even asking why. That to me felt like a very strong sign of trust. I kept our destination a surprise, so she had no idea where we were going, except that we were going to the beach. The rest of the story is pretty suspenseful, so go ahead and grab a box of tissues. Throughout the entire drive, Somer still had no idea where we were heading. We arrived in Destin latter that evening, just in time to watch the beautiful beach sun set. After we had checked into our hotel, which was within walking distance, we changed clothes and I took her out to eat. We went to the restaurant where we had had our 1st date, Louisiana Lagniappe. I thought that this would be the best place to take her because, it build up the suspense even more. We had a very elegant candlelight dinner. After we left the restaurant, we went back to the hotel, where I asked her if she would like to go for a walk on the beach. We then left to go for a walk on the beach. We walked down the beach for quite a while, because I was trying to time it just right for us to walk up on her surprise right after midnight, which would make us just in time for our 2-year anniversary.

Now as a side note: I had asked a friend of mine to do me a favor and help me with the proposal. I had him learn how to play a song the we considered our song, which was "When God Made You" by NewSong. He drove to Destin separately and set up Tiki Torches and a blanket on the beach. He then waited until we walked up.

Now back to the story. We walked down the beach for quite a while, and then when the time was right, I walked her in the direction of her surprise. As we were walking up the beaches, we came upon a spot on the beach that had a blanket surrounded by lit Tiki torches. As we were walking up to the torches, we heard music start playing. Then out of the dark, my friend Austin walks up playing our song. Well, by that time Somer was awestruck. Once the song was over I moved down to one knee and asked her to marry me. And of course she said, "YES." After a moment or two Austin handed me a rose, which I gave to Somer. Then, another friend of mine Ryan, without me even knowing about it, starting shooting fireworks off. So between the song, the proposal, the rose, and the fireworks it all turned out to be a very magical night. After, we sat on the beach for a while as a newly engaged couple.
