3) My Girlfriend of 3 and a Half Years

I wanted to surprise my girlfriend of 3 and
a half years with the engagement proposal, so I planned the big
event on the Saturday a few days before her birthday. To start
the day, I made her her favorite breakfast, in bed. Then we went
shopping at the brand new mall at Columbus Circle in NYC (where
I snuck away for 30 minutes to my insurance agent’s office to finalize
the ring insurance) and on the way back we picked up lunch to eat

I told her that we had dinner reservations at
9pm, but that she had to be ready by 6pm. When she got back, she
jumped into the
shower, and I started making preparations. I scattered a dozen
long-stemmed roses around the apartment floor, with one rose in
a vase on the coffee table in the living room. I took out a bottle
of champaign and put a tray of various cheeses (her favorite) and
crackers and strawberries.

The final step was the trickiest. I put those
glow in the dark stars all over our living room window, which faces
out onto the
Hudson River. I had bought a blacklight bulb and blacklight writing
lotion. In between the stars on the window, I wrote my proposal.
I replaced the normal lamp bulb with the blacklight bulb.

She was overwhelmed by the roses, champaign
and cheese, which we enjoyed for about 30 minutes. After calming
my nerves with 2 glasses
of champaign, I told her to turn off the main light and to turn
on the lamp. When she did that, the words "Will you marry
me" glowed in the dark." I got on one knee, and repeated
the question.
