Aaron proposed in the most fantastic way! The day had been perfect – mid-70s and sunny! I knew we were going "out" that night. Little did I know what awaited us!
Aaron was going to pick me up at 6:30 pm, so I went straight home from work to quickly get ready. Like any normal girl, I had been wondering all day what Id wear that night. Thankfully, Aaron took care of that for me! When I got home, there was a lovely dress on my bed with a note saying, "Thank you for all your help with my paper! I want to take you out tonight to celebrate its completion and express my gratitude." Not only was the dress fabulous but it also fit perfectly! When Aaron picked me up, he told me I was the most beautiful woman in the world. From the look in his eyes, I could tell he truly meant what he said. He was so excited to see how well the dress fit and how ecstatic I was to be going out in a new dress with the man I love the most!
We went to a Vietnamese restaurant for dinner so we could have my favorite food. The day before, Aaron had brought them frozen yogurt as well so we could even have my favorite dessert!
After dinner, we walked out of the restaurant, into a beautiful evening, with our arms around each other. Waiting for us was a white limousine and Patrick, the driver. Aaron nonchalantly asked if we could get a ride. Though he was trying to act like the limousine was a coincidence, I knew it was meant for us!
We drove around St. Paul and saw the city lit up in all its splendor! Patrick drove us across the river and up around the bluffs, overlooking the entire city. We stopped at Prospect Park and took a stroll along the walkway. As we came to the last park bench, I noticed a dozen red roses and a blanket to sit on. At that point, I pretty much knew this was it: he was proposing!
Aaron sat me down and put his arm around me. I could hear and feel his heart pounding! He looked at me thoughtfully and nervously said, "I have something I’ve been wanting to give you for a long time, but before I give it to you I have to warn you "it’s not a ring." That’s where he lost me! I thought to myself, "Wow, if this is what he does for ‘not a ring,’ what is he going to do when a ring is involved?!"
Aaron handed me a pair of opal earrings and explained that he had bought them in Australia six years ago, with the intent of giving them to his future wife. They were lovely and of course I was delighted, but he had more! "I have something else I want to share with you," he said, and took out a piece of paper on which was an incredibly endearing poem he had written. The poem was a reflection of our relationship together and where he saw God leading us. At the last stanza of the poem, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Completely stunned with joy, I couldn’t think of anything poetic to say. As imperfect options went through my mind, I realized – by the worried look on Aaron’s face – that those moments felt like an eternity to him! "Yes, I’d love to!," I said with a huge smile on my face. With that, he jumped up and hugged me. As we embraced, suddenly, the sky was filled with fireworks!! (He had five friends stationed below, where they were shooting off fireworks like crazy! While we were hugging, he sent them a text message saying, "Fire away!") We had our own personal, spectacular firework show, on the bluffs overlooking the city and river as we celebrated our first moments of engagement.
Back in the limousine, there was chilled champagne waiting for us. Patrick drove us across the loveliest bridge to the St. Paul Cathedral, where we picked up some friends and my brother and his wife. It was so wonderful to celebrate the evening with them, driving around and reliving the amazing night’s events!! One of Aaron’s friends prayed a beautiful prayer of blessing for us and we all toasted to our upcoming marriage!
