My husband and I had been dating for about a year. Since heís a big sports nut (hockey, baseball, basketball, you name it!) a lot of those dates were spent at various sporting events. I had NO interest in sports, but plenty of interest in him, so I went along gladly.
Other than him, about the only thing I was interested in at the games was the junk food. My favorite item was always Cracker Jacks. And of course, every time Iíd purchase a box, as I was opening it I’d say, "Now you know, if there’s a ring inside the toy surprise pack that means we’re engaged!" His response was always, "Yeah, of course!"
One beautiful August day at Shea Stadium, there we sat, basking in the sun and watching the Mets play. I sent him on a food run and he came back with the usual hot dogs, beer, peanuts and Cracker Jacks. I did my standard routine, "If there’s a ring inside…"
When I pulled out the "toy surprise" package, inside was a piece of cardboard with the words "Marry Me?" written on it along with a diamond ring! Needless to say, that was about the best "surprise" package I ever received!
A year later we were married, and of course the favors at our wedding were none other than packs of Cracker Jacks!
