My fiance went out of his way to surprise me when we got engaged this fall. We had some routine errands to run and shopping to do, so he took me to the mall that afternoon. Adam is not the biggest talker, so his quietness that day did not seem out of place. He purposefully wore a shirt and pair of shorts I did not like so that I would never suspect our engagement.
After we got back from the mall, he asked if I wanted to go on a walk in the neighborhood we first began dating in, but I was tired and did not want to go. He reacted quickly and decided to just drive around the neighborhood, but we were still quite early for his plans, so we drove for almost half a hour.
As we circled the houses that we had seen so many times on our walks, he brought up the fact that he would like to see the inside of them sometime. I pointed out one particular house that we both liked and Adam stopped the car and proceeded to walk up to the door saying he would love to see that one also. I chased him up to the door, nervous and scared, but he continued to walk and then knocked on the door. Someone inside said, “COME IN” and he just opened the door. I nervously looked around and saw one of my dresses lying on a chair and Adam said to change clothes. As we walked into this unknown house, one of Adam’s friends was making dinner and we walked into a candlelit room where a book was sitting on my chair.
I love to scrapbook and Adam had made me a scrapbook that was titled “WHY I LOVE YOU” and it went through the alphabet stating different qualities that he loved and had pictures of us and my family. “Y” was left blank with a question mark and when I looked at him, he was on one knee with a beautiful solitare ring asking me if I would marry him. I cried and cried as I said yes and then we ate a wonderful steak dinner served to us by his friends. He hid a video tape in the corner, so now we have our engagement reactions forever. I still am shocked that he asked complete strangers(who ended up being the dean of our college) to use their house for our engagement.
