I had been studying abroad in Madrid, Spain for a semester and had not seen my boyfriend Aaron for more than four months. Finally, after he finished his exams for the year, he came over to visit me. Although I still had to finish up with my exams, we had a wonderful time touring Madrid. The day after I finished my last exam, we traveled to Grand Canary Island for some summer relaxation.
It was great spending time together, just sitting on the beach and taking in the scenery. We even got to go out for a romantic dinner to celebrate my birthday while we were there. The day after my birthday was our last day on the Island, so Aaron suggested that we take a picnic dinner to the beach to watch the sunset. Walking along the beach, we talked about what a wonderful trip it had been. We ended up on a stone pier in front of a lighthouse and enjoyed the last glimpse of the sun as it dropped below the horizon.
We took a couple of pictures to remember the evening, and then Aaron took a coin out of his pocket and handed it to me. He said, ?Hey, I?ve got an idea. Turn around, close your eyes, make a wish, and throw it over your shoulder.? (We had been trying to use up the last of our European change before we headed back to the States.) When I turned back around, he was down on one knee with a beautiful diamond ring in his hand! ?I?ve been waiting for three years for this moment,? he said. ?We?ve been apart for four months now, and I know that I never want to be apart again. Will you marry me??
I was so happy and couldn?t believe that I was really living that moment. Of course I said yes! The best part was that my wish had been that we would be together forever. My wish had come true. He later told me that he was hoping that would be my wish. He also told me that he was so nervous that he didn?t even hear me say ?yes!? and double checked that that had actually been my response.
That night we celebrated at a little cafe on the boardwalk that had a band playing outside. Aaron also bought a painting of the lighthouse and pier where he had proposed to hang in our future home. I called my parents to tell them the good news, but they already knew because Aaron had driven more than four hours during his finals to ask my dad?s permission to marry me. We waited to tell Aaron?s mom and sister until they met us at the airport when we came home to be in his sister?s wedding. It was a very exciting time in life, and we?re looking forward to the years to come!
