My boyfriend Robin and I had always traveled extensively for our job. We only got to see each other on the weekends, but were fortunate enough to be able to meet in different cities across the country. Since I was one year older than Robin, I was obviously more ready to settle down than him. Not only that, but he was still at the point where he was enjoying his bachelor life by going out with the guys and spending time working on his car. So on our flight back from DC in April, I mentioned to him how much I had fun over the weekend and that I was ready to settle down. He instantly had a shocked expression on his face and told me that he honestly felt very lightheaded and nauseous. Needless to say, that was the end of that conversation, and my hopes of having a spring wedding the following year disappeared.
Fast forward a few months – we were vacationing in Denver and found some cheap tickets to Paris online for the following weekend. Since we were used to traveling impulsively, we decided to fly there for the weekend. That night we had a fancy dinner, and something must have been in the lobster or crab cakes that made Robin have terrible food poisoning the rest of the weekend. I spent the whole weekend taking care of him! Little did I know that that was the precise moment he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me.
Five days later, we met each other in New York to catch our flight to Paris. We arrived Paris Saturday morning and since both of us were jet lagged, we were both a bit grumpy. We saw some of the main sights and called it an early night. The next day we decided to climb up the Eiffel Tower and do the touristy thing – it was very crowded that day. I had no reason to suspect any sort of "foul play", since it was not uncommon for Robin and I to travel on a whim – plus, the incident in DC a few months ago left me no doubt as to where Robin stood on the idea of settling down. Anyway, we decided to go back down the tower and walk around the nice parks & fountains. We sat down to rest our feet at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, and I was thinking about what I wanted for lunch – as if Robin was reading my mind, he asked me what I was thinking of. I told him honestly that I was thinking of getting a crepe of a falafel gyro, and the next thing I knew, he kind of whisked a beautiful princess cut ring in my face. I was too shocked and dazed to put it all together – and of course I don’t really remember all the beautiful things he said to me. I just remembered the four most important words, "Will you marry me??" The rest of the weekend was bliss – I still couldn’t get over the fact that we were engaged! He told me how he realized how much he loved me when I was taking care of him the weekend before. He basically ordered a ring that Monday, had it delivered to New York where he asked my friend to pick it up for him. It just turned out that we had dinner with my friend the night before in NY, where they exchanged the "package" without me even noticing! He also told me how stressed he was going through airport security with the ring in his pocket the whole time and he had originally wanted to propose on top of the Eiffel Tower, but it was too crowded. Everything worked out perfectly, and I’m so blessed that he is my best friend for life! 🙂
