When my husband proposed to me it was a total surprise! We had been friends for about 4 years having met on the job in Phoenix Arizona. I had quit working there several years before but we still kept in touch off and on. Anyway, a couple of weeks before he was moving to Florida he called and we got together. This time our friendship turned romantic. After he moved to Florida that September he kept in touch with me and we decided to spend Christmas together in my home state of Indiana. We stayed with some friends of mine and on Christmas morning I woke up with a stocking laying on the nightstand. I looked over on his nightstand and he too had a stocking…"Santa" had paid a visit. Billy was awakened by my movement and seemed to be just as surprised as I was. I pulled a small package out of the top which had a label tied to it. It read, "I’ve checked my list not once but twice, to see if you’ve been naughty or nice." I started laughing as I unwrapped it, "I bet it’s coal", I said. Sure enough it was a package of licorice to represent coal and tied to the top of the bag was a diamond ring. Another note was enclosed..I’ve enclosed a ring with a shiny lump of coal so that you will always be reminded of this day. Will you marry me? I love you! What could I say? I had fallen desperately in love with him!
