It was a whirlwind romance – we had only caught each other’s eye across the rows and rows of people at Christmas Day gathering. Only a few months earlier, our first date wasn’t until New Years’ of 2000.
At the beginning, we both expected a long romance, I was in school, he was pursuing his career. We only saw each other for dinner on the weekends. One night, he slipped a poem he had written into the passenger seat of his truck. It was dark, but I could hear the tremor in his voice, "Nothing has ever just poured out of me like that…" I picked it up, somewhat embarrassed at the show of emotion.
As I read, my eyes began to feel with tears, I read words promising that no matter what I felt, I was perfect and perfect for him and he had no doubt, even though we just met, that we were made for each other before time began. He promised to protect me and provide for me and he wanted me to carry his children.
It was at this moment, I remembered the thirteen year old promise I made to myself, "I will never marry a man who cannot write poetry for me."
I started crying, unable to believe that this man had fulfilled my heart’s hope.
I could only gasp with the surge of emotion that rushed through me and the depth of love that broke forth. He said, "I know you’re not ready for me to purpose just yet, but I can say that I am in love with you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. And I will wait until you are ready. I would wait for you forever."
Within two weeks, we were engaged.
He purposed to me on a bench at the park where we had one of our very first dates.
He got down on his knees and looked at me, quoting his poem, "We will become one, together; We will live and love forever."
I said yes between the tears of joy.
We married only five months after we met and we are still incredibly happy today.
