5) Surprise Date

My girlfriend, Julie, was out of town in the middle of October and that gave me the perfect opportunity to talk to her parents about marriage. They gave me a very quick yes. I had this whole elaborate plan in my mind to propose to her. But for various reasons, it fell through and I was very disappointed. The day after I talked to her parents, her mom came to me with an idea. The very next weekend, Julie was planning a surprise date for me. I had no clue what the date actually was, but her mom said it was very romantic and she thought it would be very neat for me to turn the surprise around on Julie and propose to her then. I fell in love with that idea instantly.

The next weekend came and Julie told me where we were going. We were going to the north Georgia mountains for a day outside in nature and then a movie under the stars at an outdoor theatre. On the way, I asked Julie if we could find a quiet spot to pray. That is nothing unusual for us.

As we’re walking, we come to several places that she thought would have worked for the prayer time, but there were people in the close vicinity so I wanted to find another spot. Soon, we came to a clearing where you could see the mountains all around. I knew the spot would be perfect but there were people around. So I suggested waiting a little closer to sunset. So we walked a little while longer and then came back.

I started praying by thanking the Lord for this incredible woman He has blessed me with. Then I said "Lord, you know that I talked to Julie’s parents about her hand in marriage." At this point, Julie started to cry. I thought she had just figured out what was happening, but she was actually just crying because she was so relieved that I had told her. We tell each other everything and she could tell that I had been holding something all week long. As I continue on with my prayer, I tell the Lord how much I love her and how He has guided us to this point. While I’m praying, I get the ring out of my pocket. Then I said "Lord, since You have brought us here, I want to pause in this prayer!! and as I say that, I get down on one knee. We had been holding hands during the prayer and as soon as Julie felt my body shift to get on one knee, it hit her. Now she really started crying with tears of joy. She looked at me and then I asked her. "Julie Teresa Millwood, I love you more than any other person in this world. I want to spend the rest of my life beside you. Will you marry me?"

She said yes and I put the ring on her finger. She was totally surprised. She never suspected a thing until I got on one knee. So there among God’s Creation was the second most important decision I have ever made in my life. The first was asking Jesus into my heart!
