I couldn’t keep my eyes away at work; nor could he. The prettiest man I have ever seen. After dating a few months he announced, “You love me. Yes, you love me and I love you”. It was shocking and caused butterflies in my stomach because it was so true.
After a very romantic few more months he asked me to marry him. I was scared to death of marriage. After awhile he said, “Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.” That didn’t work for me but I did think long and hard about it.
What finally won me over is when he gave me a birthday gift. It was a coffee cup with a cartoon by The Far Side. It had a picture of the devil holding a pitchfork to the back of a man facing two doors. On one door it said, “DAMNED if you do.” On the other door it said, ‘DAMNED if you don’t”. The caption said, “C’ mon, c’ mon — it’s either one or the other.”
I burst into laughter and threw my arms around him, “Yes. Yes I will.”
It was the most romantic thing in the world to me. The coffee cup is still in use after 17 years of intense love.
