As a TV producer I had to be a good planner — not always easy domestically when you work in one city and weekend in another…
Annie’s birthday is Sept 29th and that night I took her out to dinner near our weekend place.
She wasn’t in that good a mood because she relishes birthdays and my present that year had been minimal.
At the end of the meal the waitress asked if we’d like coffee. She served it and told Annie there was another present for her. Annie’s face on seeing just an audio cassette case was a picture. I had to persuade her to open it.
She did — and there was the diamond ring.
I proposed and said I’d like to get married on my birthday so that I wouldn’t ever forget our wedding anniversary.
She accepted, then jumped bolt upright in horror — realising my birthday came just five days after hers.
Five days to plan a wedding? And, she pointed out, we couldn’t just book register offices like that.
In fact I’d booked two – one in our work city the other near our weekend place.
It was a great party — no tiresome relatives and even the milkman dropped in and got drunk on champagne.
