I proposed to my wife in December of 1999. My wife (girlfriend at the time) had been waiting for a ring for quite a while so I wanted the proposal to be memorable.
My wife loves the DeBeers diamond commercials with the classical music playing and the black and white romantic stories. She would literally tear up when watching them… I’m not really sure if it was because she wanted a ring so bad or she was touched by the commercial… But anyway, I wanted to incorporate the “DeBeers” song into the proposal.
I told her I was going to take her out to dinner and to dress nice, but I wouldn’t tell her where we were going. I was working for an Architecture firm at the time and I told her I wanted to swing by one of our projects on the way to see if it was going well. I drove back to a lake, in a residential subdivision, where we first kissed 4 years ago, to the day. It was dark and we were walking down the path. When we reached the bench where we had first kissed, a violinist in a tuxedo emerged from the woods and began playing the DeBeers song. At that moment, I got down on my knee and proposed. He played "Canon in D" after that. She teared up, of course, and luckily for me, she said yes and we went out for a nice dinner to celebrate.
By the way, I didn’t buy a DeBeers diamond. I bought from Diamond Cutters International
