I waited six fairly unromantic years to be proposed to. I did the usual dropping of hints, nagging, etc. I was coming close to thinking I would have to leave this wonderful guy, who is truly my best friend. I was frustrated because he seemed to not understand my desire for this commitment. Family and friends were always saying, "When is that guy going to give you a ring?" He was everything I could ever want in a man. He cleans, cooks, worries about me, and spends time watching old movies with me. But talk of marriage was always a dead end conversation! He gave me every indication that getting me a ring was the farthest thing from his mind!
It was Valentine’s day and I came home from work. He had roses delivered to my work, and I thought that was the extent of this romantic holiday. I walked in to a dark room filled with candles, soft music playing, chocolate hearts spread everywhere, and my boyfriend in a suit. (He is very much a jeans and t-shirt guy).
He grabbed my hand and we started to dance. After the dance he looked at me, he had his hand behind his back, and then he brought his hand forward and there was nothing in it. I laughed, and said, "For a minute there, I thought you were going to propose!" Inside I was crushed. I thought this was it! He asked for another dance, but this time when the song was over he got down on one knee. I was stunned! He took out the most beautiful ring I ever saw and asked me to marry him. He could barely get the words out because he was choked up. The two of us started crying like babies! I couldn’t stop crying, I was so happy. He then told me he had prepared a wonderful dinner and even had a bottle of expensive champagne.
It was the most magical night of my life, and well worth the long wait! He had been secretly planning this since before Christmas! He even said it took him most of the day to build up his courage. Everyday I look at my ring and remember that night, and everyday I remember to do something to let him know how much I love him. I hope our wedding is as old fashioned and romantic as his proposal. Ladies, if you know you have the right man, then please wait as long as you need to….he’ll know when the time is right.
