I had been in California hiking and camping with a group of 37 11-year-olds for two weeks. Upon returning to Atlanta on a Wednesday, I was extremely tired. I couldn’t even find the energy to do my six loads of laundry from the trip. My boyfriend had been busy due to a promotion at work. He convinced me that we both would benefit from a Saturday day hike in North Carolina, about a two hour drive away. I dug the cleanest of my dirty hiking clothes out of the laundry….I figured that no one would be seeing me anyway.
As we were leaving the parking lot, he said that he forgot something and ran back upstairs to our apartment. He returned with a big beach towel and said that he thought it would be nice to hit a swimming hole after hiking.
We drove up the Glenn Falls, near Highlands, North Carolina. We took a leisurely hike around a loop trail and then headed down the trail towards the three waterfalls. We passed the first two before spying a secluded spot for lunch. It involved a climb down a steep hill, but it was hidden enough to enjoy lunch without being interrupted. We took off our hiking boots and settled down for a sandwich.
After lunch he set off to explore the stream. I was still feeling tired and just stretched out on the rock. He called me over to look down at the falls, and I reluctantly got up. He was standing barefoot in the stream, and the next thing I knew he was on his knee, in the water, asking me to marry him!
After I said yes (of course!), I said that we should go to my parents’ house the next day to celebrate. He said, "That won’t happen, because we aren’t going home." He had been smuggling my clothes and toiletries into the car all week, the last of which were hidden in the last minute beach towel.
He had been planning the entire time that I was in California. He had taken that very same hike two weekends before to find the perfect spot. He had taken Monday off of work and booked two nights at a beautiful bed and breakfast near Asheville. We spent the next two days relaxing, talking about the future, and getting ready for the whirlwind of activities that will come with planning a wedding. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect proposal!
